Next Event: Centenary Book Launch and Hall of Excellence Inductees for 2021

The next event will be at 6pm on Friday 23rd April 2021 at the school assembly hall.

Firstly, we will be launching the Centenary Book. Edited by former scholar and teacher, Alec Young, this book covers the history of Hobart Junior Technical, Hobart Technical High and New Town High Schools.

A must for all associated with the school, the book

is on sale for $30 from the school office,

plus postage if needed.

Buy a copy on the 23rd and have someone

special autograph it for you!

Secondly, we will be inducting our 2021 Hall of Excellence Inductees. Join us to welcome former scholars who have excelled in the fields of Academic and Professional, Arts/Culture, Community Service and Leadership, and Sport.

Drinks will be available from the bar and entry cost will be $5 to cover food.

2. Advance Notice: Annual Debate – Old Scholars v School Team – date to be advised

We are pleased to announce that the Old Scholars v School Debate is to become an annual event!

Readers may remember the Great Debate during the Centenary, when three judges, all former students, took on the School Team to debate the lowering of the voting age to 16.

The School Team prevailed, convincing the judges that they weren’t ready (or interested enough) to vote. Thanks to Blissenden Lawyers, we will see the School Team take on a team of former students.

Myths and Legends

A Confession

My first contact with the school was in 1942 when the Junior Technical School was in Bathurst Street and I was a student studying Chemistry at University. Our laboratory was on the second floor immediately above the broad driveway on which the school assemblies were held. The boys were tightly packed into the limited space available and we looked down upon them, as it were, from a great height. We used to sprinkle them with a fine spray of water blown from apparatus called wash bottles. They would look up at us in frustrated desperation. They could do nothing about it. They were too crowded to be able to move aside and, under the discipline of the school, unable to create a disturbance. They were sitting ducks. The university students very unfairly took advantage of the situation. But if looks could kill, we would have been consigned to everlasting perdition.

Twenty-four years later I re-appeared on the scene as Headmaster. It is remarkable how greatly perspectives can change in twenty-four years.
