Use Your Head!

An early case of sport concussion. Five a side soccer was a new thing in the late 50’s/early 60’s. It has since been rebranded as Futsal but is basically the same game. ‘5 a side’ was introduced to ‘Tech’ in 1960 by then Sportsmaster Ken Dexter – of later Hutchins school infamy.

During an early try at the new game on the old basketball court Rodney Nicol was the unlucky goal keeper. In his enthusiasm ‘Nico’ stood in the crouch position underneath the bar which was much lower than the standard soccer goal frame.

With an early save attempt Rodney stood quickly and ko’d himself on the bar. Hilarity ensued and Rodney retired from the game but without referral to a team of medicos that now seem to rule over concussion in all sports.
